A
Visit to Country Cat Rescue / Sept 7, 2008
I wanted to share my experience today visiting a
very special place and an equally special lady.
My good friends Barbara and Debbie invited me to
come for a drive to see a real cat-lover. We had
to drive forty minutes from Carleton Place but
we found out it was worth the drive.
When you drive up the driveway you see your
regular country bungalow; however on closer
inspection there are all kinds of outdoor
enclosures coming off the house. We met Gwen -
the lady with the big heart for cats. Gwen has
rescued over 300 cats and kittens. She is very
responsible and get everyone spayed or neutered,
vaccinated and a full medical check-up with a
veterinarian. She even goes a step further and
has all the adopted cats get a leukemia test
done BEFORE they go to their new home. She is
passionate about her cats and this is why she
had devoted her entire house, as well as a
heated barn to housing these cats. With very
little help Gwen does the feeding, cleaning,
medications and general care for all 300. It is
a tremendous enterprise. She wakes up every day
at 7 am to do two hours of care of the cats
before going to her full-time job. When she
comes home she does not watch television. NO
WAY, not for Gwen. She then does another four
hours of care for the cats.
Her place is amazing. There are cats sleeping on
the bed, counter, sink, stove, cuboards, sofa
and so on. The cats rule this house and Gwen is
a visitor!! Many of her rescues are feral cats
that she has turned around. All the cats have
access to the outdoors through a cat flap. Their
outdoor areas are enclosed for their own safety
so that fishers do not get them.
Unlike visiting your regular shelter, I left
Gwen's feeling light-hearted. The only one I felt
sorry for was Gwen. What a tremendous amount of
work for one hard-working cat-lover!! Thank god
for people like Gwen. She was great inspiration
for us lesser people that do what we can. Gwen
does it all and the cats love her for it.
Thanks for the great visit Gwen!

Health in Support of Ottawa Valley’s Cat
Rescue Program
Ottawa's holistic Vet, Dr. Eddie Beltran,
and Expert Pet Nutritionist, Catherine Lane,
will be teaming up for a 3-hour “Pet Health
Seminar”, Saturday February 24 at 11am, in
Subud Hall located at 357 Wilmont St in
Ottawa. This is a rare opportunity to
listen in on up-to-date health and nutrition
information that can dramatically reduce the
odds of your pet developing major diseases.
Tickets are available at Natural Pet Foods,
339 Churchill Avenue N., Ottawa, for a
donation of $10. All proceeds will go to
the Ottawa Valley Cat Rescue Program "Don't
Litter, Spay and Neuter", which has neutered
hundreds of stray cats over the past 7
years.
Dr. Eddie Beltran has actively
pursued training in the field of alternative
and complementary medicine and his
veterinary practice for over 30 years. His
therapies include complex homotoxicology,
neural therapy, dietary modifications,
vitamin therapy and Chinese medicine. It is
through his work in this field that the
Holistic Health Care Centre for Pets, as
part of Blair Animal Hospital, has been
established.
Catherine Lane
is an exceedingly well-trained canine
nutritionist and dog lover. Lane is the
owner of The Possible Canine where she
specializes in overall dietary assessment
and the prevention and treatment of diseases
such as cancer and diabetes in dogs. Her
internet group, www.thepossiblecanine.com,
features informative posts, links and
general knowledge sharing about anything
related to natural dog care.
Natural Pet Foods, located at 339
Churchill Avenue in Ottawa (www.naturalpetfoods.ca),
is the proud sponsor of the “Pet Health
Seminar”. This store offers a variety of

The Ottawa Valley Cat Rescue Program,
"Don't Litter, Spay and Neuter”, will be
receiving a donation of all proceeds from
this seminar. One unspayed female cat
and its offspring can produce up to
420, 000 kittens over a 7-year period.
The focused efforts of this charitable
organization, managed by Pam Knowles, have
led to the neutering of hundreds of stray
cats in the Ottawa area over the past 8
years, preventing the birth of millions.
